Virginia Tech Hires Florida Atlantic's Brian White as Athletic Director

Virginia Tech has officially named Florida Atlantic University athletic director Brian White as its new Vice President and Athletic Director, the school announced Monday evening. White replaces Whit Babcock, who is retiring from the position.

ESPN's Pete Thamel first reported that White had emerged as the target in Virginia Tech's AD search, with sources indicating a deal was expected to come together in the near future. The hire was subsequently confirmed by the university.

White's Background and Track Record

White spent more than eight years leading the athletics department at Florida Atlantic, a Group of 5 institution. During his tenure, he oversaw a 625% increase in donations since 2021, according to the university's website, and has earned a reputation as a strong fundraiser. In 2024, he negotiated a new stadium deal for the program.

White also built notable relationships across college athletics during his time at FAU. He gave Dusty May his first head-coaching job in basketball and worked alongside head football coach Lane Kiffin for two seasons.

The hire is not without potential scrutiny. Some observers have noted that White's experience comes entirely from a Group of 5 program, and FAU's football program has carried a bumpy on-field record during his tenure. Virginia Tech competes in the Atlantic Coast Conference, presenting a significantly larger platform and set of expectations than those White managed at Florida Atlantic.

White's fundraising credentials and his experience negotiating major facility and contract deals are expected to be central to his role as Virginia Tech looks to remain competitive in a rapidly evolving college athletics landscape.
