Saban warns Kiffin: LSU Year 1 turnaround unlikely, Oxford return looms
Nick Saban praises Lane Kiffin's roster moves at LSU but cautions that a championship turnaround in Year 1 may not be realistic.
As Lane Kiffin prepares for his first season as LSU's head coach, former Alabama coach Nick Saban is pumping the brakes on expectations — while still expressing confidence in Kiffin's long-term prospects in Baton Rouge.
Speaking on 'The Pat McAfee Show' on July 23, Saban acknowledged Kiffin's aggressive roster construction heading into 2026, noting the Tigers brought in 59 new players, a strong recruiting class and high-end transfer portal additions. Still, Saban raised questions about whether the program has the depth and culture in place to endure the grind of a full SEC schedule. 'I don't think there's any doubt that Lane will be successful at LSU,' Saban said. 'I just don't know if it's realistic to think that turnaround is going to happen immediately.'
LSU opens the 2026 season against Clemson, a significant early test for Kiffin. The Tigers' schedule then intensifies with a Sept. 19 road trip to Ole Miss — the program Kiffin left to take the LSU job — at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium. That matchup is expected to produce a hostile reception, a dynamic Saban addressed directly during SEC Network's media days coverage on July 24.

Kiffin responded with a story of his own, recounting his first sideline visit to Tiger Stadium as Alabama's offensive coordinator in 2014 — a game the Crimson Tide won 20-13 in overtime. He described watching Saban's wife, Terry, spread what she called protection against voodoo along the sideline before kickoff. Saban confirmed the account and suggested Terry might be willing to reprise the ritual when LSU visits Oxford. 'Sure, she loves Lane,' Saban told host Dari Nowkhah. 'I'm sure she would.' Alabama went 7-2 at Tiger Stadium during Saban's 17 seasons with the Crimson Tide.
Despite his measured outlook for 2026, Saban was emphatic about Kiffin's broader track record and LSU's structural advantages. He pointed to Kiffin's stops at Florida Atlantic, where he turned the program around, and Ole Miss, where he built a consistent winner, before arguing that LSU represents the highest-ceiling job Kiffin has ever held. Saban also cited alignment between the coaching staff and administration as a key factor. 'He's been successful everywhere he's been, really,' Saban said. 'I think there's more potential for success at LSU than at any place he's ever been.'
