Daniels' Leadership, Nwaiwu Signing Fuel FSU Optimism as Fall Camp Opens

Florida State opened fall camp in Tallahassee on July 30 with one of its healthiest rosters in recent memory, a rebuilt offensive line, and a new starting quarterback, as head coach Mike Norvell looks to rebound from back-to-back disappointing seasons that produced a combined seven wins.

Norvell said at his opening press conference that the roster is largely available for full participation, though a handful of players remain on a limited basis. Receivers Boggs and Gbayor are progressing through recovery, while quarterback Sanders is expected to be fully ready. Norvell said both Boggs and Gbayor have a realistic path to being available for the season opener against New Mexico State on August 29.

Nwaiwu Anchors Overhauled Offensive Line

The most significant roster addition along the offensive line is Chimdia Nwaiwu, a 6-foot-5, 310-pound tackle who transferred from Stephen F. Austin after earning first-team All-Southland Conference honors in 2025. Nwaiwu started all 13 games last season as SFA went 11-3 and reached the FCS playoff quarterfinals. Pro Football Focus graded him as the top offensive tackle in the Southland Conference, including an 82.5 pass-blocking grade. He has two years of eligibility remaining.

Nwaiwu is one of five offensive linemen Florida State brought in through the transfer portal after line coach Herb Hand lost all five starters from last year's unit. The other additions are Bradyn Joiner from Purdue, Xavier Chaplin from Auburn, Paul Bowling from Troy, and Nate Pabst from Bowling Green. All five have starting experience and are expected to see significant playing time.

Under center, Florida State will turn to Ashton Daniels, who transferred from Auburn. Daniels is expected to start alongside former All-SEC running back Tre Wisner, who came from Texas. Norvell is also taking over playcalling duties this season. Despite ranking sixth nationally in total offense at 472 yards per game and 22nd in scoring offense in 2025, Florida State finished with just five wins, a result that has placed Norvell squarely on the hot seat entering the new year.

Overall, Florida State brought in 24 players via the transfer portal this offseason after losing 35 players through the same avenue following last season. The Seminoles open fall camp looking to turn the page on two difficult years, with Norvell widely regarded as facing a prove-it season as the program attempts to return to relevance in the ACC.
