Tennessee, Arkansas Finalists as Asa Barnes Sets 5 p.m. Commitment Announcement
The three-star running back from Martin, Tennessee, will announce his college choice live on the Rivals YouTube channel on July 29.
Three-star running back Asa Barnes will announce his commitment at 5 p.m. ET on July 29, live on the Rivals YouTube channel. The 5-foot-11, 200-pound prospect from Westview High School in Martin, Tennessee, listed Tennessee, Arkansas, USC and Florida State as finalists, but the race has effectively narrowed to the Vols and the Razorbacks.
Barnes is ranked the No. 36 running back and No. 551 overall prospect in the 2027 class by one service, and the No. 41 running back and No. 24 player in Tennessee by another. Tennessee offered him a scholarship during an unofficial visit on June 5, 2025, and Barnes has made three visits to Knoxville since, including an official visit on June 19.

Why Arkansas Remains in the Picture
Arkansas remains a genuine threat largely because of Barnes' relationship with Razorbacks running backs coach David Johnson, who first recruited Barnes while at Florida State before following Barnes' recruitment to Fayetteville. Barnes alternated official visits between Tennessee and Arkansas this summer, keeping both programs firmly in contention heading into the announcement.
Recruiting analysts have leaned toward Tennessee in their final predictions. On3.com's Steve Wiltfong picked the Vols with 80 percent confidence, and analyst Chad Simmons followed with a Tennessee pick at 70 percent confidence. Should Barnes choose Tennessee, the Vols would become only the fifth program to land multiple top-40 running backs in the 2027 class, joining Auburn, LSU, Alabama and Notre Dame. He would join five-star running back David Gabriel Georges, already committed to Tennessee and the first five-star back pledged to the program under head coach Josh Heupel.
Barnes brings more than rushing ability. He helped Westview go undefeated and win the Class 3A state title, posting 207 all-purpose yards and two touchdowns in the BlueCross Bowl as a rusher, receiver and returner. He is also a standout in basketball and track and field. Among the top 40 running backs in the 2027 class, only five remain uncommitted entering his announcement, underscoring the significance of his decision for any program still seeking a quality ball-carrier in the cycle. Tennessee enters the announcement with 18 commitments in its 2027 recruiting class.
