Mensah Takes Over as Miami's QB1 With CFP Title Expectations Looming

Miami Hurricanes fall camp opens next week with Darian Mensah entrenched as the starting quarterback, tasked with leading a program that reached the national championship game last season and now faces expectations of finishing the job. Mensah, a transfer from Duke, was named the ACC Preseason Player of the Year and enters camp as the clear-cut starter in what is likely his only season in Coral Gables.

At Duke, Mensah threw for nearly 4,000 yards behind a shaky offensive line, and he arrives in Miami with top receiver Cooper Barkate, who caught passes from Mensah for 1,106 yards and seven touchdowns last season. The supporting cast also includes All-ACC preseason selection Malachi Toney, running back Mark Fletcher Jr., tight end Elija Lofton, and wideout Vandrevius Jacobs, giving Miami one of the deepest offensive rosters Mario Cristobal has assembled.

Ball Security the Central Question

The most pressing concern heading into camp is ball security. Costly turnovers hampered Miami's offense last season, and analysts tracking the Hurricanes have identified protecting the football as the single biggest question surrounding Mensah. The consensus view is that Miami does not need a repeat of Cam Ward's performance — it needs Mensah to limit mistakes and trust the talent around him on the way to a deep College Football Playoff run.

On defense, Miami absorbed significant losses to the NFL Draft, most notably Rueben Bain, Akheem Mesidor, and Keionte Scott. Defensive tackles Ahmad Moten and Missouri transfer Damon Wilson II are expected to anchor a rebuilt front, but the unit will face scrutiny after losing some of the nation's most disruptive players.

Eight of Miami's nine ACC opponents were picked by conference media to finish eighth or lower in the standings, leaving little margin for excuses if the Hurricanes fall short.

Miami has never won an ACC title despite joining the conference in 2004, and the program still carries that unfulfilled ambition into 2026. Cristobal's squad came within 50 yards of winning the national championship last season, falling to Indiana in the title game. With Mensah at the helm and the ACC Preseason No. 1 ranking in hand, the standard entering fall camp is nothing short of a championship.
