Ole Miss Faces NIL Lawsuit Backlash While Golding Builds No. 15 Recruiting Class

Ole Miss finds itself navigating a public relations dispute over its decision to sue two former players for alleged NIL contract breaches, even as first-year head coach Pete Golding continues to build momentum on the recruiting trail. The university is seeking $550,000 in breach-of-contract damages from former edge rusher Princewill Umanmielen and $400,000 from former guard Devin Harper, both of whom left Oxford after a College Football Playoff semifinal loss to Miami and followed Lane Kiffin to LSU, where both are projected starters.

Ole Miss says both players signed NIL deals with the program shortly before entering the transfer portal. The university released a detailed timeline of the dispute and issued a statement defending the action. "The University of Mississippi has a responsibility to enforce its contractual terms," the school said, "and this position is consistent with the actions of other institutions in the current landscape of college athletics." Critics, however, have pointed to Ole Miss's own pursuit of Luke Ferrelli — a transfer from Clemson who reportedly had not yet officially signed his NIL agreement there — as an example of inconsistent standards. The university has not publicly addressed that comparison.

Golding's Recruiting Class Takes Shape

Away from the legal controversy, Golding has answered early questions about whether Ole Miss could sustain its recruiting profile after Kiffin's departure. As of July 30, the Rebels hold the No. 15 class in the Rivals Industry Team Recruiting Rankings, featuring 22 total commits and 13 blue-chip prospects. The class also ranks eighth in the SEC, ahead of programs including Tennessee, Alabama, and South Carolina.

The in-state pipeline has been a particular bright spot. Three of the top-five recruits in Mississippi are currently committed to Ole Miss. Louisville four-star defensive lineman Mitchell Turner, ranked No. 66 nationally and sixth among all DL prospects, headlines the class alongside Ackerman four-star Ben'Jarvius Shumaker, ranked No. 83 nationally and seventh at his position. Shumaker drew attention in June when he briefly flipped to Colorado before returning to his Ole Miss commitment. Tupelo four-star offensive tackle Antonio Berry, ranked No. 85 nationally and sixth among offensive tackles, rounds out a formidable trio of in-state commits.

Chattanooga's Keegan Croucher, a 6-foot-4.5 four-star quarterback ranked No. 122 nationally, has held his commitment since October and remained with the Rebels through the coaching transition. Golding's ability to retain key pledges made before his arrival and add new blue-chip talent signals that Ole Miss intends to compete at the level Kiffin established, even as the NIL lawsuit continues to draw scrutiny about the program's conduct in the broader transfer market.
