Analysts Predict Breakout Season for Mateer as Oklahoma's Offense Eyes Leap in 2026

National analysts are zeroing in on Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer as a candidate for a significant statistical jump in 2026, pointing to new weapons surrounding him and a second year in offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle's system as the key variables heading into fall camp.

Mateer completed 62.2 percent of his passes for 2,885 yards, 14 touchdowns and 11 interceptions last season while adding 431 rushing yards and eight scores on the ground. Despite those mixed numbers, he helped guide the Sooners to their first College Football Playoff appearance under head coach Brent Venables. Oklahoma's offense finished ranked No. 92 nationally in total yards, a figure that has drawn scrutiny but also raised expectations for improvement.

Wide receiver Isaiah Sategna carried an outsized share of Oklahoma's passing attack last season, accounting for more than 31 percent of the team's receiving yards and nearly half its receiving touchdowns on 67 catches for 965 yards and eight scores. The Sooners have since added transfer receivers Trell Harris and Parker Livingstone to distribute the load, with Mateer himself noting Sategna's growth as a leader during the offseason. Venables described Sategna as one of the toughest players on the roster.

McElroy: Offensive Leap Could Make Oklahoma a Title Contender

On Friday, ESPN's Greg McElroy framed the offensive question in starker terms, arguing that a genuine improvement could push Oklahoma beyond playoff contender status altogether. Oklahoma returns Mateer, running backs Tory Blaylock and Xavier Robinson, Sategna, and four of five starting offensive linemen, giving Arbuckle significantly more continuity than he had in his first year.
