Heupel: Tennessee QB battle wide open as fall camp opens; Knowles defense draws high expectations

Tennessee opened fall training camp Wednesday at Haslam Field with an unsettled quarterback situation and a new defensive coordinator drawing significant attention heading into the season. Head coach Josh Heupel addressed both topics during a media session Tuesday, the day before the Vols took the field for their first practice.

Four quarterbacks are competing for the starting job: early enrollee freshman Brandon Faizon, redshirt freshman George MacIntyre, redshirt freshman Mason Phillips, and redshirt junior transfer Ryan Staub, who came to Tennessee from Colorado. Heupel made clear that the competition would be a process rather than a quick resolution.

We are starting training camp, nobody's going to earn it or lose it day one. Don't want to see a guy make the same mistake twice. I want to see them be a different player than they were when they finished spring ball, in the command and control of what we are doing offensively. You play a position where you have to be able to distribute the football, so that's understanding our scheme, defenses, protections, checks and all of that. Then, I want to see their fundamentals come into play, so that they can be consistently accurate down the football field. It's not going to be perfect here as we embark on training camp. I say the same thing to our entire team, I want to see guys that don't make the same mistake twice. They're stacking reps, stacking days and continuing to grow as a player. Somebody will go out there and earn it. Once that guy has done that, then we will name a guy.

Knowles Brings Defensive Pedigree to Knoxville

On the defensive side of the ball, the hiring of coordinator Jim Knowles has been widely regarded as one of the most consequential staff additions of the offseason for any program in college football. Knowles arrives with a track record of building elite defensive units, and expectations in Knoxville are that his scheme will produce a significant upgrade for the Vols. His defenses have historically shown their sharpest improvement over the course of a season, with consistent performance under pressure becoming a hallmark of his units.

Tennessee's sixth-year head coach enters camp presiding over a roster in transition at multiple key positions, but the blend of experienced transfers and young developmental talent at quarterback reflects the program's approach to building depth within Heupel's up-tempo offensive system. Each candidate will have the opportunity to stack reps through camp before a starter is identified, according to Heupel.

Both competitions — the open quarterback race and the integration of Knowles's defensive system — figure to shape Tennessee's identity heading into the 2026 season. Camp practices at Haslam Field will provide the earliest indication of how both situations develop.
