Wiggins Outlines Play-Calling Philosophy, Aims to Maximize Reed's Dual-Threat Ability

Texas A&M offensive coordinator Holmon Wiggins addressed the media for the first time Tuesday following five preseason practices, laying out the principles guiding his debut as a play-caller and explaining how redshirt junior quarterback Marcel Reed fits into his offensive vision for the 2026 season.

Wiggins, who spent the previous two seasons as the Aggies' wide receivers coach and co-offensive coordinator under Collin Klein before Klein departed for Kansas State, takes over full play-calling duties for the first time in his coaching career. His elevation drew criticism from national media who questioned whether the role demanded a more seasoned play-caller, but Wiggins has pointed to his background — including years as Nick Saban's wide receivers coach and assistant head coach at Alabama — as the foundation for his approach.

Wiggins cited Saban directly when discussing the relationship between coaching and talent, noting that the late Alabama head coach often reminded his staff that good coaching requires good players. By that measure, Wiggins has plenty to work with. The Aggies return a wide receiver corps that includes junior Mario Craver and Alabama transfer Isaiah Horton, a 6-foot-4, 215-pound addition who gives the unit more size alongside its established speed and physicality. Wiggins said his priority is straightforward: get the best 11 players on the field and find ways to involve every playmaker.

Reed's Command, Mobility Central to Wiggins's Scheme

Reed enters his second full starting season having thrown for 3,169 yards, 25 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions in 2025. Wiggins praised the quarterback's growing command of the offense on Tuesday, crediting both experience and time in the system for Reed's development through the early days of camp. The new coordinator also identified Reed's mobility as a deliberate schematic weapon, particularly against aggressive defensive fronts.

Reed will attempt to navigate a rebuilt offensive line featuring four new starters, a variable that Wiggins and first-year quarterback coach Joey Lynch will have to account for as the preseason progresses. Reducing Reed's 12 interceptions from last season and improving consistency in the pocket remain areas of emphasis, but Wiggins made clear that play-action and designed rollouts will remain central elements of the Aggies' offense heading into the 2026 campaign.
