ESPN slots Texas A&M in Tier 3 as potential CFP dark horse for 2026

ESPN placed Texas A&M in its third tier of preseason college football rankings on Friday, grouping the Aggies alongside BYU, LSU, Oklahoma, Texas Tech, and USC as programs that could emerge as College Football Playoff contenders in 2026. The tier, labeled 'Maybe this is the year?,' drew immediate attention given Texas A&M's recent trajectory under third-year head coach Mike Elko.

ESPN writer David Hale cited the Aggies' 2025 efficiency numbers as the basis for their placement, highlighting a defensive success rate that stood well above the rest of the SEC.

Last season, Texas A&M had a 47.1% successful play rate on offense vs. FBS opponents, and a 65.1% success rate on defense. The differential of plus-12.32 percentage points was 50% better than that of any other SEC team.

Elko guided Texas A&M to the College Football Playoff for the first time in program history in his second season, while the program saw a program-record 10 players selected in the 2026 NFL Draft. Despite those departures, the Aggies return 65% of their 2025 roster and added 17 transfer portal players alongside their 2026 signing class. Quarterback Marcel Reed, entering his second full season as the starter, is expected to carry higher expectations after gaining experience within the system.

Schedule and roster questions loom

Texas A&M came in at No. 8 in the US LBM Coaches Poll released earlier this month and is set to open the 2026 season at home against Missouri State in 21 days. The Aggies face one of the more demanding nine-game SEC schedules, with the slate intensifying in October. Four new offensive line starters must find cohesion quickly, and reducing turnovers from Reed remains a point of emphasis heading into camp. New offensive coordinator Holmon Wiggins takes over the unit with the expectation of scoring 30 or more points per game.

The first AP Top 25 poll of the season is scheduled for release next Monday, which will offer another measure of where the national media stands on the Aggies. Regardless of where Texas A&M lands in that ranking, the program's preseason credentials — built on a loaded secondary, a revamped defensive line, and a veteran roster — have been enough to keep the Aggies in the conversation as a legitimate CFP contender entering 2026.
