Marcel Reed's deep ball, film breakdown headline Texas A&M fall camp

Through nine preseason practices, Texas A&M quarterback Marcel Reed has drawn steady scrutiny heading into his second full starting season, with a deep-ball connection to Alabama transfer wide receiver Isaiah Horton and a film breakdown from college football analyst Brooks Austin combining on Saturday to keep the redshirt junior at the center of Aggie preseason conversation.

During the Aggies' first scrimmage on Saturday, Reed delivered a strike to Horton in tight coverage against freshman cornerback Victor Singleton. The throw highlighted an area in which Reed had previously struggled — accurate passing in confined windows — and the moment was captured and distributed by the Aggie media team despite the practice being closed to outside media. Horton, a 6-foot-4, 215-pound transfer, is expected to give the offense the contested-catch option it lacked last season, pairing alongside returnees Mario Craver, Ashton Bethel-Roman, and Terry Bussey, with Bussey drawing particular praise through the early camp stretch.

Reed posted career numbers in 2025 — 3,169 passing yards, 25 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions — as A&M reached the College Football Playoff for the first time in program history. However, his performance faltered against top competition. Against top-35-ranked defenses, he managed just six touchdowns while accounting for eight of his twelve interceptions, and he threw zero combined touchdowns across back-to-back CFP losses to Texas and Miami, completing 20 of 32 passes for 180 yards with two interceptions in the regular-season road loss to the Longhorns.

Scheme shift under Wiggins expected to unlock Reed's mobility

Film analyst Brooks Austin of The Film Guy Network released a breakdown of Reed's 2025 campaign on Saturday, using the A&M-Texas game as a focal point and noting that Reed needs to return to playing as a true dual-threat. The analysis aligns with a significant schematic shift under first-year offensive coordinator Holmon Wiggins, who replaced Collin Klein after Klein departed to become Kansas State's head coach. Where Klein leaned heavily on 12-personnel sets with two tight ends — limiting wide receiver deployment and forcing Reed into static pocket decisions — Wiggins is expected to incorporate more RPO looks that get Reed outside the pocket and put the ball in the hands of his wide receiver rotation after the catch.

The offensive line also enters 2026 with a rebuilt look, with four new starters — all SEC transfers — slotted in at left tackle, left guard, right guard, and right tackle. Coach Mike Elko has said the group is expected to start, though nothing is finalized. If the unit gels, it would give Reed a more stable platform to operate from as the Aggies prepare to open the season against Missouri State on Sept. 5 at Kyle Field.
