Davis Warren Named Stanford's Starting QB for 2026 Season Opener vs. Miami
The Michigan transfer will start under center for the Cardinal on August 29, setting up a marquee Week 0 matchup with Miami.
Stanford has officially named Davis Warren, a transfer from Michigan, as its starting quarterback heading into the 2026 season opener. Warren, who spent four seasons with the Wolverines before joining the Cardinal program under new head coach Tavita Pritchard, will be under center when Stanford faces Miami on August 29.
Warren's path to the starting role is an unconventional one. He arrived at Michigan as a walk-on before earning a scholarship and eventually winning the starting job. In 2024, his first season as the Wolverines' primary starter, he completed 64.1 percent of his passes for 1,199 yards, seven touchdowns and nine interceptions. His season ended when he suffered a torn ACL during Michigan's ReliaQuest Bowl victory over Alabama, sidelining him for the entire 2025 campaign. He transferred to Stanford in January in search of a fresh start.
Warren's background extends well beyond the football field. When he was 17, he was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia, a battle he fought through while continuing to pursue his athletic career. That resilience has become a defining characteristic of the quarterback heading into his first season with the Cardinal.
Miami Matchup Looms Large
The announcement sets up an immediate high-profile test. Stanford struggled badly in a 2025 meeting with Miami, generating just 144 total yards and 89 passing yards in that contest. With Warren now directing the offense, the Cardinal are expected to be considerably more aggressive through the air. Warren's quick release figures to be central to Stanford's game plan, with the offense likely looking to get the ball out fast to neutralize Miami's pass rush and stress the Hurricanes' secondary.
From Miami's perspective, Warren presents identifiable tendencies to scheme against. His career interception total of 10 against seven touchdown passes signals turnover risk that could benefit the Hurricanes' secondary. He is also not a running threat, posting a career rushing average of just 0.2 yards per attempt, meaning Miami can expect a pass-first attack with minimal designed quarterback runs or scramble situations to contend with.
Stanford opens the 2026 season on August 29. Warren's official designation as the starter ends what had been an ongoing camp competition and gives both programs a clear picture of the quarterback matchup as final preparations begin.
