Oklahoma's offensive line depth will be tested early in the 2026 season after starting center Jake Maikkula suffered a knee injury during the Sooners' first full scrimmage of fall camp last Saturday, according to reports surfacing Thursday.

Maikkula, who was entering his second consecutive year as the starting center, went down during what was described as a real, competitive scrimmage setting. While the injury is not expected to end his season, he is likely to miss at least a portion of Oklahoma's early schedule, leaving the coaching staff with a significant gap to fill along the interior offensive line.

A Hole in the Middle

The center position is among the most demanding on the offensive line, requiring not only physical play at the point of attack but also responsibility for identifying defensive fronts and making protection calls before the snap. Losing an experienced starter who has already logged a full season in that role is a meaningful blow to continuity, particularly heading into the opening weeks of the season.

Oklahoma will need to sort out its options at center before the season opener, whether through an internal candidate who has been developing behind Maikkula or by shifting an existing lineman into the spot. The program has not publicly named a replacement or interim starter as of Friday morning.

Maikkula's expected return at some point during the 2026 campaign offers some relief, but the timing and pace of his recovery will determine how much disruption the Sooners' offense absorbs. Fall camp — already a high-stakes period for establishing depth and cohesion along the offensive line — now carries added urgency as Oklahoma works to find an answer at one of its most critical positions.
