Senator Cassidy Targets Penn State QB Rocco Becht's One-Class Enrollment

The winningest active quarterback in college football faces eligibility scrutiny after revealing he is taking a single online course at Penn State.

Penn State quarterback Rocco Becht, who arrived in State College by following coach Matt Campbell from Iowa State, drew national attention and a threat of congressional action on Friday after it became public that he is enrolled in just one online class at the university.

Louisiana Senator Bill Cassidy signaled he was prepared to take action over the situation, framing the disclosure as emblematic of broader concerns about academic standards in college athletics. The senator's office indicated that the student component of the student-athlete designation should still carry meaningful weight.

High-Profile Transfer at the Center of the Storm

Becht transferred to Penn State alongside Campbell, who took over a program that underwent significant turnover after the 2024 season. James Franklin departed the head coaching role, and former starter Drew Allar moved on to the National Football League, leaving Becht as the centerpiece of a rebuilt offense. He is considered the winningest active quarterback in college football and has appeared on multiple elite preseason watch lists heading into the 2026 season.

The controversy landed just two weeks before Penn State opens its season against Marshall. The Lions were already navigating a condensed preseason calendar, and the eligibility uproar added an unwanted distraction to what had otherwise been a period of measured optimism around the program.

ESPN also released a late Day 3 draft grade for Becht on Friday, underscoring his status as one of the more closely watched quarterbacks in the country entering the fall. The dual attention — both as a pro prospect and as a lightning rod for the student-athlete debate — made Becht one of the more prominent figures in college football discourse heading into the final stretch of the preseason.

It remains unclear whether any formal eligibility review has been initiated by the NCAA or whether Senator Cassidy's office will pursue specific legislation. Penn State has not publicly addressed the enrollment questions as of Friday evening.
