SEC opposes NFL-to-college returns as Kiffin lands Wright, Harris at LSU

The Southeastern Conference drew a firm line Monday evening after a videoconference of the league's presidents and chancellors, releasing a joint statement opposing the return of former professional athletes to college competition. The move came directly in response to a growing wave of NFL players regaining college eligibility following a series of court rulings, with LSU and head coach Lane Kiffin emerging as the most prominent beneficiaries.

College athletes, not former professional athletes, have been at the heart of the Southeastern Conference. Individuals who choose to leave college athletics, sign professional playing contracts, and compete professionally should not then be permitted to return to college competition. Allowing that to occur will blur the line between college and professional sports, create significant competitive equity concerns, and reduce opportunities for high school and current college athletes.

The statement stopped short of issuing any binding conference-level prohibition on such players competing in SEC games, leaving open the question of whether the league would take concrete action to enforce its position. The SEC concluded its statement with a renewed call to pass the Protect College Sports Act, federal legislation that has yet to reach a vote in Congress.

Wright and Harris headline LSU's pursuit

At the center of the controversy are two former Ole Miss players. Tight end Dae'Quan Wright, who participated in Cleveland Browns preseason action before being waived, has an agreement in place to join Kiffin's program in Baton Rouge pending clearance. Defensive lineman Zxavian Harris, waived by the New Orleans Saints last month, has also committed to LSU, describing the move as a business decision. Their eligibility stems from a Louisiana state court ruling that granted a group of roughly 15 players an additional year of college eligibility. If cleared, both players could face Texas A&M on September 26 at Tiger Stadium.

Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore also weighed in on the situation Monday, acknowledging the absence of any governing framework. The eligibility chaos traces back to Federal Judge Charlotte Sweeney's class-action injunction, which opened the door for fifth-year seasons after the NCAA expanded its eligibility rules in May. An appeals court has since granted a stay of that ruling, but subsequent state-level lawsuits have continued to produce new eligibility grants, leaving conferences, coaches, and players navigating an environment with no consistent national standard.
