Texas A&M Enters 2026 Ranked No. 7 in Talent Composite as Elko Targets 'Winning Plays'

Texas A&M enters the 2026 season ranked seventh in 247Sports' Team Talent Composite rankings, a reflection of a roster that retained 65 percent of its 2025 contributors while adding 17 transfer portal acquisitions following a record 10 Aggies selected in the 2026 NFL Draft. Much of the offseason focus has centered on redshirt junior quarterback Marcel Reed, who threw four of his career-high 12 interceptions across the two playoff losses while operating in a pocket-heavy system under former offensive coordinator Collin Klein. First-year OC Holmon Wiggins is expected to restore more RPO looks and play-action concepts that allow Reed to utilize his dual-threat skill set. Reed, who threw for 3,169 yards and 25 touchdowns last season, showed improved decision-making and deep-ball accuracy during preseason scrimmages. He is supported by a wide receiver room that now includes Alabama transfer Isaiah Horton alongside returning contributors Mario Craver and Ashton Bethel-Roman.

Defense Addressed After Playoff Struggles

Texas A&M's defense surrendered nearly 400 rushing yards combined against Texas and Miami in the playoff, a breakdown Elko attributed partly to a lack of linebacker size that has since been addressed. The Aggies return a loaded secondary featuring cornerbacks Dezz Ricks and Julio Humphrey alongside safeties Dalton Brooks and Marcus Ratcliffe, and added Colorado transfer safety Tawfiq Byard and former Tennessee cornerback Rickey Gibson. Up front, Northwestern transfer edge Anto Saka and senior defensive end T.J. Searcy headline the pass-rush unit, while sophomore edge Marco Jones — coming off 2.5 sacks and 3.5 tackles for loss in a limited 2025 role — has drawn attention as a breakout candidate after a physically imposing preseason. ESPN named Jones a sleeper heading into his first season as a full-time starter.

Replacing four starting offensive linemen drafted in the spring presented a significant challenge, partially addressed through four SEC transfer additions, including LSU's Tyree Adams and Coen Echols, former South Carolina guard Trovon Baugh, and Alabama's Wilkin Formby.
