Keelon Russell Named Alabama Starter, Austin Mack Locks In as Backup Ahead of ECU Opener

College football commentator Josh Pate projected Alabama as a legitimate SEC contender despite the youth of its roster, predicting the Tide will win at least 10 games for the second consecutive season — contingent on Russell's ability to translate his practice performance to live competition.

I think they can be a pretty good team. I think they can compete for the SEC championship, and I've got them winning 10 games. So I'm a little detached from the crowd on this. But it's contingent on a few things. The run game being a lot better… Keelon Russell has to be a really good player. I've gone down and watched them a couple times, so I've seen him and I know how special that looks. But it's got to translate into a game.

The Tide are managing several injury situations heading into Saturday's opener. Veteran defensive lineman Jeremiah Beaman suffered a season-ending injury last week. Running backs AK Dear and EJ Crowell, both dealing with ankle injuries, are expected back early in the season — DeBoer indicated Dear could return by late September, with the SEC opener at Kentucky serving as a realistic target for Crowell. Freshman safety Jireh Edwards underwent arm surgery after going down last week but is expected to return at some point this season.

Alabama enters the matchup as a 28.5-point favorite, with Polymarket odds giving the Tide a 98 percent chance of winning, though traders put their probability of covering the spread at just 50 percent. The over/under is set at 54.5. The two programs have met once before, in 1998, when Alabama edged East Carolina 23-22.
