Kiffin's LSU Routs Clemson 51-10, Raising Questions About Swinney's Future

Lane Kiffin's first game as LSU head coach ended in a statement victory Saturday night in Baton Rouge, as the Tigers dismantled Clemson 51-10 in what became the most lopsided defeat of Dabo Swinney's career. The statistical gap was staggering. LSU finished with 644 total yards and 38 first downs while limiting Clemson to 145 yards and eight first downs. A Program Under the Microscope

The margin eclipsed the previous worst losses of Swinney's tenure — a 37-point defeat to West Virginia in the 2012 Orange Bowl and a 37-point loss to Florida State in 2013. It was also the fourth consecutive season Clemson opened 0-1 and the fifth time in six years. The defeat followed a 7-6 finish in 2025, Swinney's worst record since 2010, a season in which the Tigers went 4-4 in ACC play and posted their first losing home record since 1998. Swinney resisted the use of the transfer portal to rebuild the roster, a contrast sharply illustrated by Kiffin's transfer-laden LSU squad. Kiffin did not soften his assessment of the opposition after the game. Asked about his scout team's performance in preparation for Clemson, he noted that the simulated opponent had roughly matched the real one's output. Postgame, Swinney deflected questions about whether LSU's transfer-portal resources and budget were responsible for the outcome, instead placing the blame on his own team's execution. He acknowledged uncertainty about which quarterback would start the following week against Georgia Southern. LSU, ranked No. 13 entering the week, is projected to crack the top 10 in the next AP poll, with analysts suggesting the Tigers could climb as high as No. 8 depending on other results.
