Kentucky's Big Blue Wall stonewalls Oklahoma as Nic Anderson torments former team in 21-13 win

Kentucky walked into Norman on Saturday night as the No. 15 team in the AP Poll and walked out with its most convincing statement of the season, a 21-13 come-from-behind road win over Oklahoma that featured a three-interception fourth quarter, a highlight-reel catch from a former Sooner, and a dominant performance from the offensive line against one of college football's premier defenses.

The fourth quarter told the story. Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer threw three interceptions in the final period, including a 41-yard pick-six from Jordan Castell, and Ty Bryant sealed the game on the next possession with another interception. By then, Kentucky's offense had already done its part, with quarterback Kenny Minchey leading a go-ahead touchdown drive when the Wildcats needed points most.

The go-ahead march was made possible, in part, by one of the most acrobatic catches of the season. With less than nine minutes remaining, Minchey threw over the middle into the red zone, and wide receiver Nic Anderson battled for the ball as he went to the ground, somehow pulling it in for a 17-yard gain down to the 12-yard line. Playing against his former team, Anderson tied for the Kentucky lead with five receptions for a team-high 48 yards.

Anderson has 17 receptions for 197 yards and a touchdown this season, averaging 11.6 yards per catch. Because injuries cost him significant time in previous seasons, he could apply for a medical redshirt and return for another year in 2027, but for now the redshirt senior is focused on keeping Kentucky in the College Football Playoff hunt.

The line that cleared the way

Oklahoma entered the night ranked No. 5 in the country in total defense and No. 14 in sacks per game under Brent Venables, and the narrative all week was that Kentucky's offensive line — the Big Blue Wall — was going to get demolished by David Stone, Jayden Jackson, Taylor Wein and PJ Adebawore. Instead, that foursome finished the game with zero combined sacks. Stone, widely regarded as one of the best defenders in the sport, played 46 snaps without recording a solo tackle, a quarterback hit, a sack or a tackle for loss. Kentucky out-sacked Oklahoma five to three.

The Wildcats opened the game with a 67-yard touchdown drive, though the Sooner defense held them to just 52 yards for the rest of the first half. Coach Cutter Leftwich's line committed only a couple of errors across the entire game, and it also paved the way for a march deep into Oklahoma territory on the ensuing drive before a botched fourth-down call inside the 10-yard line stalled a second straight scoring threat. The line's growth has been a priority in year one of the Will Stein era, and it has helped fuel a 6-1 start.

The week after the win also brought a minor viral moment. SEC Network sideline reporter Tori Petry asked Stein after the game how it felt to beat a ranked team on the road — Kentucky was the ranked team, not Oklahoma — and the clip circulated widely on social media. Stein gently corrected the mistake, noting that UK was No. 15 in the AP Poll before downplaying the rankings, and addressed the exchange again when meeting with reporters this week.

"Obviously, I respect what they do," Stein said. "Number one, they have a job to do. You know, they're live on the air too. People — you know, I've made mistakes. I've said the wrong thing at times."

"It's nothing personal. My job is to answer the question clearly to them and give our fans the message that they need. But everybody's got a job, just like you guys, and it's part of the process. But, obviously, it's respect number one because of their job and how important it is to our game."

Kentucky, coming off an overtime thriller against LSU the week before, now turns its attention to Vanderbilt with a visit to Kroger Field on deck.
