Fall Camp Realities: Depth, Departures, and Identity

Friday brought a wave of fall camp dispatches — some programs building momentum, others absorbing setbacks.

via Yahoo Sports CFB

Fall camp has a way of sorting things out quickly, and Friday's dispatches made that clear across the sport. At Michigan, Kyle Whittingham is impressing a hard-nosed culture on a program still finding its footing after a difficult coaching transition. Down in Gainesville, Jon Sumrall and new offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner are engaged in a similarly deliberate project — rewriting what it means to be a Florida football player from the ground up.

Not every camp storyline was about construction, though. Rutgers absorbed real damage on Friday when Greg Schiano confirmed a season-ending injury to Zilan Williams and the departure of Canaan Edwards from the program entirely — the kind of compounding roster news that tests a staff's depth planning heading into the season. Texas A&M had its own quiet personnel development, with a transfer wide receiver slipping off the roster without announcement even as the quarterback depth chart is beginning to take shape around Marcel Reed.

The more optimistic bulletin came out of South Bend, where Notre Dame's quarterback coach offered pointed praise for CJ Carr's development ahead of a difficult 2026 schedule. Heisman conversations are still early, but the people watching Carr every day at practice are clearly encouraged by what they're seeing. Across the board, Friday was the kind of fall camp day that reminds you rosters are still very much in flux heading into August.
