Texas A&M's No. 1 Class Holds Firm After Missing on 5-Star CB Dobson

The Aggies retain the top-ranked 2027 recruiting class despite losing out on Joshua Dobson, while Marcel Reed's clutch performance looms as the program's on-field question mark.

Texas A&M's 2027 recruiting class remains ranked No. 1 nationally even after the Aggies missed out on five-star cornerback Joshua Dobson, who would have been their sixth five-star commit in the class. The setback did not significantly alter the outlook for a haul that has drawn widespread attention across college football.

Despite the Dobson miss, the program's future secondary appears well-stocked. The No. 1-ranked 2027 class already features six elite defensive back commits, giving the Aggies depth at the position regardless of the failed pursuit. Texas A&M had been on a roll assembling the class before losing out on Dobson.

More Recruits Still in Play

The Aggies may not be finished adding to the class. Texas A&M has received an official prediction to land rising 2027 four-star linebacker Mikahi Allen out of New Jersey, with Allen expected to announce his commitment on July 11. A commitment from Allen would further bolster a class that is already drawing national recognition.

On the roster side, the program faces a short-term challenge at linebacker. Senior Daymion Sanford is expected to miss the first half of the 2026 season due to injury, though he is anticipated to be a key contributor once he returns. His absence early in the year could test depth at the position before the schedule reaches its most demanding stretch.

Perhaps the most consequential variable heading into the season is the development of quarterback Marcel Reed. Reed's talent is considered undeniable, but analysts have pointed to the mental side of his game as the area most in need of growth. Texas A&M's playoff ambitions are seen as closely tied to whether Reed can perform in high-pressure situations, making his clutch-play ceiling one of the central storylines for the program.

Taken together, the Aggies enter the offseason with a recruiting class that continues to lead the country despite a notable miss, a linebacker corps that will need to manage without one of its veteran leaders early in the year, and an offense whose ceiling depends largely on how Reed responds when the stakes are highest.
