Jake Maikkula Injured in First Fall Scrimmage, Expected Back in 4-6 Weeks

Oklahoma starting center Jake Maikkula left the Sooners' first fall camp scrimmage on Saturday with an injury, creating immediate uncertainty along an offensive line already dealing with multiple absences. Initial concern pointed toward a potential season-ending situation, but subsequent reports have offered a more optimistic outlook.

SoonerScoop's George Stoia and Pete Nakos of On3 reported that Maikkula will be able to play again this season, though neither specified a return timetable. John Hoover of Sooners on SI put a more concrete window on the recovery, reporting that Maikkula is expected back in four to six weeks. If that timeline holds, the starting center could be available for Oklahoma's road trip to Georgia, though the program may elect to give him additional time before returning him to action. The Sooners' bye week falls after the Georgia game and before the Red River Shootout in the second weekend of October.

Depth Options at Center

With Maikkula unavailable, Oklahoma will look to Western Kentucky transfer Caleb Nitta or true freshman Noah Best to fill the void at center. Best has drawn notice during fall camp primarily at guard, while the offensive line has seen additional shuffling elsewhere. Fodje has shifted to left tackle, and Michael Fasusi has also been sidelined with an injury, leaving the unit in a period of significant flux as the Sooners approach their September 4 season opener.

Maikkula served as Oklahoma's starting center throughout the 2025 season and was widely regarded as positioned to take a step forward heading into 2026. His absence elevates the center competition to the most pressing position battle remaining in training camp, with Oklahoma now less than three weeks from kicking off its season.

The Sooners returned to the practice field on Monday, beginning their third week of fall camp. How quickly the offensive line stabilizes around Maikkula's absence — and whether Nitta or Best emerges as a reliable placeholder at center — will be among the key storylines to monitor as Oklahoma counts down to its opener.
