Mensah, Toney Shatter Miami Records in 45-6 Season-Opening Rout of Stanford
The Duke transfer quarterback and sophomore receiver each set program records as the Hurricanes dismantled Stanford on Friday night.
STANFORD, Calif. — Darian Mensah and Malachi Toney wasted no time making their marks at Miami, combining to shatter multiple program records in a 45-6 blowout of Stanford on Friday night to open the 2026 season.
Toney, a sophomore, turned in the most prolific receiving game in Hurricanes history, hauling in 12 receptions for 234 yards and three touchdowns. The yardage total broke Eddie Brown's program record of 220 yards set in 1984, while his three touchdown catches tied the single-game school mark. Only two of his receptions, including a 47-yard scoring grab, came in the second half, as both he and Mensah were removed in the third quarter with the outcome long decided.

Mensah's Debut Sets the Standard
Mensah, the high-profile transfer from Duke, opened his Miami career by completing 27 of 30 passes for a career-high 401 yards and five touchdowns — establishing new program records for passing yards and touchdown passes in a debut. The duo connected on a 48-yard pass on the Hurricanes' very first play from scrimmage, setting the tone for the evening. Mensah's transfer to Coral Gables was among the most scrutinized moves of the offseason, following quarterbacks Cam Ward and Carson Beck, who had each made the same journey in the two prior seasons. Mensah had led Duke to the ACC title the previous year, throwing for 3,973 yards and 34 touchdowns. Fellow Duke transfer Cooper Barkate contributed four catches for 67 yards and a score.

Toney also took a moment after the game to acknowledge the Miami faithful who traveled cross-country to witness the opener. "Them fans traveling six hours," he said. "I just wanted to at least let them feel me, touch my hand." With record-setting performances from both their new quarterback and their emerging receiving threat, the Hurricanes gave their fanbase plenty to celebrate on the long trip home.
