SEC files federal lawsuit, Louisiana judge grants injunction in LSU NFL-returnee fight

Lane Kiffin's first season at LSU is already entangled in federal litigation after the SEC challenged the eligibility of two former NFL players signed to play for the Tigers.

The SEC filed a federal lawsuit in Alabama on Thursday targeting LSU, head coach Lane Kiffin, university president Wade Rousse, and athletic director Verge Ausberry over the program's recruitment of former NFL players to the college ranks. Hours later, East Baton Rouge Parish Judge William Jorden granted a preliminary injunction allowing tight end Dae'Quan Wright and defensive end Zxavian Harris to join LSU while the eligibility case continues — setting up a collision between conference authority and court orders ahead of Saturday's season opener against Clemson.

Wright and Harris, both former Ole Miss players who followed Kiffin to Baton Rouge, were among plaintiffs in a Louisiana state court lawsuit seeking an additional year of eligibility for athletes from the high school recruiting class of 2022. A temporary restraining order was granted in that case on Aug. 19. The two players had brief NFL tenures this offseason: Wright signed with the Philadelphia Eagles as an undrafted free agent before being released and added to the Cleveland Browns' roster, while Harris signed with the New Orleans Saints but did not practice after undergoing foot surgery. The Browns released Wright on Aug. 24, and he subsequently returned to LSU.

Despite Thursday's injunction, neither Wright nor Harris appeared on LSU's official depth chart for the Clemson game. The decision appeared designed to avoid an immediate confrontation with the SEC while the broader legal dispute plays out. SEC leaders have discussed potential consequences for LSU including probation, game boycotts, and expulsion from the conference. Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr also urged the conference to consider all available measures if LSU fields former professionals.

Kiffin has argued that courts have granted athletes another year of eligibility and that conferences cannot ignore those orders simply because they object to the outcome. Critics have taken a sharply different view. Former Georgia quarterback Aaron Murray, appearing on The Jim Rome Show, said players who sign NFL contracts and participate in professional camps have moved on from college football and should accept that. Former Louisiana Tech quarterback Luke McCown posted online that the situation is "a mess" and "ridiculous," arguing that the NCAA should not function as a league players can enter and exit like minor league baseball.

The eligibility dispute is one piece of a broader transformation at LSU under Kiffin, who was hired away from Ole Miss following the Rebels' playoff run last season. The Tigers saw 38 players transfer out and 44 new players commit to the program, with 247Sports ranking LSU's transfer class No. 1 in the country. Among the headline additions are quarterback Sam Leavitt, previously a two-year starter at Arizona State, and offensive lineman Jordan Seaton, rated the No. 3 player available in the portal. Wright, Harris, and two other players with NFL connections — Jack Pyburn and Junior Tuihalamaka — remain in eligibility limbo as the federal case proceeds.
