Texas Closes June With 12 Commitments, Capped by DL Jason Johnson
Three-star defensive tackle Jason Johnson of Humble Atascocita chose the Longhorns over Cal, LSU, and Vanderbilt to cap a dominant recruiting month.
Texas football closed out the month of June with a surge of recruiting momentum, landing its 12th commitment of the month with the pledge of three-star defensive lineman Jason Johnson from Humble (TX) Atascocita.
Johnson, a 2027 prospect, made official visits to Cal, LSU, and Texas before announcing his decision. The Longhorns secured his commitment over those finalists, picking up a key SEC target in the process.
Johnson Caps a Recruiting Heater
The Longhorns had already been described as being on a "recruiting heater" throughout June before Johnson's announcement, with his pledge representing the program's 12th commitment of the calendar month.
Texas targeted Johnson as a versatile defender who fits into the program's future plans along the defensive line. His upside was cited as a factor making him an intriguing addition to the 2027 class.
The commitment also offset at least one recruiting loss for Texas in the same period, as the program navigated a competitive recruiting landscape against SEC programs including LSU and Vanderbilt for Johnson's services.
Texas's recruiting staff is also tracking activity at the cornerback position and in the wide receiver market as the 2027 cycle continues to develop.
